Introduction to Budgeting for Professional Accountants

Budgeting is a critical aspect of planning for all organizations.  The good news is that you don’t have to be an expert to contribute in a meaningful way to the budgeting process.  What is required, however, is a solid grounding in the fundamentals of how to build and monitor detailed budgets.

       
Gain an understanding of the importance of budgeting, the different types of budgets, and the various steps involved in the budgeting and monitoring process By taking this course you will become a valued team member, helping to steer your organization in uncertain times and working to ensure organizational goals are met with limited resources.    

This introductory-level course is designed for participants who have some familiarity with accounting and/or finance concepts and are able to apply them in a work setting.  Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of budgeting, the different types of budgets, and the various steps involved in the budgeting and monitoring process.  

Instructor-led webinars will be used with participant feedback and interaction throughout the course. In addition, participants will work in teams to analyze case studies which closely follow real-life business situations. Some self-directed study based on a participant manual provided electronically is expected and the manual is intended to be a takeaway guide for future reference.

Applicable for:
This course is intended for accountants, finance managers or others who are, or expect to be, either directly involved in an annual budget process or use budgets to monitor organizational performance.

Prerequisites - Knowledge, Experience or Courses
Experience in an accounting or finance position with an organization  

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Define budgeting and its importance in accounting and financial management.
  • Identify the different types of budgets and their uses.
  • Understand the steps involved in the budgeting process.
  • Prepare and analyze budgets effectively.
  • Utilize budgets to manage performance and meet organizational objectives.

Content
The course is designed to build knowledge of budgeting through a series of modules that increase in complexity and culminate in participants building a detailed budget and composing a budget management report.  

The topics in this seminar include:

  • The benefits of budgeting and the role of accountants in the budget process
  • Understanding different types of budgets and how to choose one appropriate to your organization
  • Steps in the budgeting process and aligning the budget with organizational goals
  • How to prepare a detailed budget using common technology tools
  • Monitoring a budget as the fiscal period progresses, and knowing when to take corrective action to achieve objectives
  • Using actual results to refine and improve the budget process.

Participants will reflect back the theory during interactions such as polls and in chat, or speaking to a specific point in small groups or to the full plenary.  In addition, to reflect learning in small group discussions and performing mini case study activities and bringing results for presentation to the cohort.
