Survival Skills for a New Era of Ethics and ESG

In this newly minted course, TEDx speaker Morgan Hamel asserts that we have entered a new and morally polarized era of ethics and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) - one in which the “old” way of managing business ethics, corporate reputation, whistleblowing and ESG is insufficient.  Stakeholders - from employees to customers to investors - have diverse perspectives on what and how much organizations ought to do to address the social and environmental challenges of today. Woke/Anti-Woke, Purpose/Profit, ESG/Anti-ESG – these debates are alive around the world and CPAs in various roles are increasingly being called to take part.

After suggesting that the prevalent “everybody wins” attitude towards ESG has failed to equip employees and leaders with the skills to navigate the very real tension that can arise between different stakeholder expectations in business, Morgan presents the concept of ESG 3.0 – a version of ESG characterized by moral humility as it relates to ‘taking a stand’, respect for pluralist stakeholder viewpoints, an emphasis on focused ESG commitments, and a firm commitment to integrity in ESG communication.

This innovative course explores our current ethical and ESG landscape. It suggests a shift into an era defined by moral complexities and the triad of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) concerns. Established approaches to business ethics, corporate reputation, and ESG seem inadequate in this new milieu.
Using case studies, personal experience, and interactions with leading ESG thought leaders from around the globe, Morgan offers an engaging and fresh perspective on ESG and concrete strategies to help participants at all levels of organizations feel more confident in this new era.

Applicable for:
CPAs at all levels of organizations, especially those in leadership roles or whose roles have an ESG component.
