"How you manage your information determines whether you win or lose." These words, spoken by Bill Gates over two decades ago, struck a powerful chord with Derek Boutang, FCPA, FCMA. They ignited a passion that would shape not only his career but also his approach to leadership, volunteerism and life.
For Derek, this insight underscored the transformative power of information – not just to drive professional success but to create opportunities and inspire meaningful change in the lives of others.
“That idea opened my eyes to how we can use what we have – our skills, our time, and our expertise – to make an impact,” he reflects.
This realization inspired Derek to take a non-traditional career path as a CPA, blending accounting with a passion for IT. However, the same philosophy also drives his extensive volunteer work, where he dedicates himself to helping others navigate challenges and achieve their goals.
“For me, volunteerism is a way of life—it’s a way to use my opportunities to empower people to realize their potential,” he shares, dedicating not only financial support but, more importantly, his time and expertise to support those in need. "I recognize the privilege of my career and how much I’ve benefitted from the support I’ve received, and that fuels my desire to give back.”
Derek began his career by combining his CPA designation with a strong interest in IT, a rare path for accountants at the time.
“Being in IT allowed me to approach challenges in new ways – managing systems, businesses, and people,” he explains. “It gave me the tools to lead, innovate, and in turn, make a difference.”
Now, as Head of Engineering at Skip (previously SkipTheDishes), Derek leads a global team of over 100 engineers while supporting Canada’s largest delivery network. While his professional achievements are significant, Derek views his volunteer efforts as equally impactful.
His work spans organizations like Variety’s Bike Camp, South East Sno-Riders, Never Alone Cancer Foundation, and the Manitoba Runners’ Association. Derek’s commitment to coaching and mentorship is evident through his involvement as a mentor in Skip’s Product and Technology mentorship program and championing diversity in programs like Women in Tech.
A cornerstone of Derek’s volunteer work is his active role in the CPA profession. After earning his CPA designation in 2001, Derek developed a profound appreciation for the profession and its ability to drive change.
During his six-year tenure with the CPA Manitoba Foundation (2018-2024), Derek held multiple leadership roles, including Treasurer and Chair of the Board, where he played a pivotal role in advancing the Foundation’s strategic priorities. His contributions encompassed approving the Foundation’s strategic plan, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives, and helping to grow the Foundation’s assets from $3.4 million in 2017 to $5.2 million in 2023.
He also served on several committees, including the Audit and Finance Committee (2020-2021), Nominating/Governance Committee (2021-2024), and Student Support Committee (2018-2022).
“Volunteering in the CPA community keeps me connected to a profession I deeply respect,” shares Derek. “It reminds me why I chose this path, and the honour and responsibility that comes with the designation.”
Derek’s work with the Foundation left a lasting impact, particularly through his service on the Student Support Committee. He recalls reviewing applications from individuals facing extraordinary challenges.
“I came across stories of people in incredibly difficult situations—single parents, recent immigrants juggling multiple responsibilities, all while striving to meet the rigorous requirements to become CPAs or reclaim their professional standing from their home country,” Derek says with heartfelt sincerity.
“Witnessing their resilience and determination was truly humbling and I feel honoured to contribute, even in a small way, to their journey as they build a brighter future for themselves and their families.”
For Derek, these experiences reinforce the transformative power of even modest contributions and his belief in the importance of fostering equity and opportunity.
“It’s about creating pathways for success and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has the chance to achieve their goals,” he says. “That’s a responsibility I take seriously, and it’s why I’m so passionate about contributing to the growth of this profession.”
Another defining experience was his role as conference chair for the CMA Manitoba Conference Committee, where he had the privilege of introducing a keynote speaker—19-year-old Hannah Taylor who had dedicated her life to helping the homeless.
“Her story of selflessness and action made me reflect on my own contributions,” Derek shares. “She had already accomplished so much at such an early age. It was a powerful reminder of the impact one person can make and it inspired me to be more intentional about how I give back.”
His contributions also extend to Folklorama, an organization celebrating cultural diversity and one deeply tied to his Norwegian heritage. Inspired by his mother’s involvement in the Scandinavian community, Derek embraced this connection with pride and gratitude.
“My mom’s Norwegian heritage and her involvement in the Scandinavian center motivated me to engage with this community,” he shares, adding that “it’s been a meaningful way for me to connect with my roots while contributing to something larger than myself."
Derek credits his parents for instilling a sense of purpose and responsibility that continues to guide his approach to volunteerism. As he nears retirement, he looks forward to dedicating even more time to these efforts.
“Retirement will give me the chance to volunteer in ways I can’t now,” notes Derek, who has also achieved the remarkable feat of completing marathons in all 50 U.S. states and every Canadian province and territory. “Volunteerism isn’t just about what you give – it’s about the lessons in humility, gratitude, and community you receive in return. That, I believe, is the true reward of volunteerism.”
As International Volunteer Day approaches on December 5, Derek’s story reminds us that success isn’t solely defined by professional accolades but also by the meaningful contributions we make to our communities. His story is a testament to the power of giving back—not just as an act of kindness, but as a cornerstone of personal growth, leadership, and fulfillment.
