CPA Manitoba Closes Office, Announces Day of Solemn Reflection on September 30

CPA Manitoba will close their office on September 30 to mark Canada's first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

In closing their office, CPA Manitoba joins federal offices, banks, post offices and many other private businesses and corporations across the country in a day of solemn reflection.

“By recognizing a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, all Canadians will be able to reflect, learn, grieve and take collective action towards reconciliation. Today, we are taking another important step forward as we walk along this shared path together.” said The Honourable Daniel Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs in the Government of Canada's official press release

This year for the first time, September 30, 2021 is a federal statutory holiday, which was one of the 94 calls to action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission back in 2015. The day is equally known for Orange Shirt Day, which began in 2013.

Orange Shirt Day honours the story of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad who, then aged 6, wore a brand new orange shirt which was bought by her grandma for her first day of residential school. When she arrived, it was taken, never to be returned. Since Phyllis shared her story, the orange shirt has become an important symbol of remembrance for all those impacted by the terrible legacy of the residential school system in Canada.
