Choosing to undergo additional education and professional training is a significant choice for any individual. It’s a journey with twists and turns alongside potential pitfalls, even at the beginning of the path. For Mallory LePla, CPA candidate, her decision to enter the CPA program came during the busiest time of her life.
“I was working 30 hours a week in my first two years and taking courses full time to progress through school,” said LePla. “It was a heavy course load alongside the job that I needed to finance my education.”
Though she was not one to complain about the effort needed, Mallory knew that between work, school and personal obligations, the combination and pursuit of higher education would exact a toll. It was her commitment to be the best student she could be, however, that opened her eyes to the CPA Manitoba Foundation.
“I heard about the CPA Manitoba Foundation scholarship during my studies towards a BBA at the University of Winnipeg and applied. In time, I was fortunate enough to be selected for it,” LePla said. “I had the chance to meet with Donovan Henzel, the Foundation’s Executive Director, and soon after received the CPA of Manitoba Foundation Indigenous Business Scholarship during a ceremony.”
The scholarship made a significant impact for Mallory by easing some of her financial obligations. Her continued excellence in her studies even allowed her to receive the scholarship the next three years, planting the seeds for her continued success.
“Each time I received the CPA of Manitoba Foundation Indigenous Business Scholarship, I was able to cut down my working hours to a much more manageable 15 hours per week. I could keep focused on my education while maintaining my wellbeing,” said LePla. “It really allowed me to keep a better work-life balance. I also managed to maintain my GPA. Without it, I doubt I would’ve been able to maintain my high standard of quality.”
The scholarship has given her the ability to prioritize her education. This is invaluable as she balances being a candidate in the CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) while continuing to build her career at Grant Thornton LLP. Above all, LePla is thankful for the doors that the Foundation and its scholarship have opened for her as well as the relationships it has created.
“With the scholarship, I’ve been able to engage with the CPA Manitoba staff, who have been incredibly helpful and welcoming in answering my questions along the way. It really proves that the profession is a great resource,” said LePla. “I can now manage my time more effectively on the journey towards my designation. It’s made new things possible for me, and is helping me fulfill my potential.”
